Chris Hadley is a performer, composer, and sound artist based in Los Angeles, CA. He holds degrees in percussion performance from Southern Methodist University and Stony Brook University, where he focused on new music performance and improvisation. In 2022 he completed a PhD in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology at the University of California at Irvine.
As a performer/composer, Chris's work incorporates handmade percussion and electronic instruments, reactive computer code, and compositional improvisation systems. Central to his work is the use of these materials as a means to organize improvisational performances through an emphasis on embodied interactions with a sonic environment, eschewing representational musical forms. His research and creative work interrogates this structuring of improvisational creativity between persons and things as an example of embodied cognition, in which musical forms take shape through complex interactions within a musical ecology.
